It was a perfect rugby day at Cal Maritime on Saturday. In the first match of the day, the Gladiatrix took on the Berkeley All Blues for their third – and toughest – D1 match of the season. In the face of tough All Blues defense, the score was 10 – 7 at the half, and it wasn’t until the second half that the Gladiatrix were able to pull away, finishing with six tries on the day for a 32 – 12 final score. Students Amy Naber, Jordan Gray, and Sarah MacArthur featured, and second quarter Aubrey Huey was named player of the match. Next week they face Colusa RFC away.
In the men’s match, our D1 side took on Olympic Club in an excellent match. Similar to the women’s game, it was not until the second half before the Gladiators were able to dismantle the Olympic defense. At the half, the Gladiators lead Olympic Club 14 — 12, with tries by Dev Ferris & man of the match Maka Tameilau. Second-quarter flyhalf Gui Casenave handled the kicking duties, and first-quarter flanker Zach Bronte was strong in kickoffs, lineouts, and defense. At the final whistle, Life West finished strong at 38 – 20. Next week’s D1 match is away against the Sacramento Lions.
Lastly, a shoutout is needed for Athletics Director & Head Coach Adriaan Ferris for suiting up for the B side match.
